![]() The way the music blends with the images on screen is haunting and beautiful, and helps add to the tragedy of the story. The animation is beautiful and certain scenes, including the air raids and anything with the fireflies are amazing works of art. I'm not a big fan of animation, but there are some films that are so great that a person's personal preferences are irrelevant, and this is one of those films. How the two go about doing that and the boy's development from a child to a (somewhat) responsible adult due to the change in the surroundings makes up the spine of the movie. We follow Seita and Setsuko, a brother and sister that have lost their parents in the war and are now forced to fend for themselves in the war torn country. Through it's well observed and very real characters, Grave of the Fireflies portrays a story of loss, heartbreak and the effect of war on civilians in a manner that is more effective and more firmly based in reality than many live action films about the same subject are. However, every now and then an animated film comes along that extends it's boundaries and manages to deliver a very adult story, and Grave of the Fireflies is one of those films. I can recommend this series even if you have already seen the anime.Animation is often seen as a childish medium, and for good reason as kid's films often are animated. It can only be hoped that we will see more of her in the future. The acting is super be, all the cast give their best performance but especially Sasaki's performance is marvellous and touching. This series also depicts the hollowness of war-time slogans and how misleading they can be. It shows what war can do to people, in this case both to Seita and his aunt. This series thankfully doesn't judge the aunt as immoral, she is simply a mother who has to take care of her own children. You should ask to yourself if you would make a hard decision like Seita and his aunt have to make. It clearly shows what difficult (immoral)decisions people have to make during war-time. This series not only shows the suffering of both children in a very vivid way but also shows the perspective of the aunt. Fans of that should know what to expect when seeing this. This is Japanese 'hoamu doruama' (home drama). This made for TV mini series is a different adaption from the same novel of which the by far more famous anime was made. ![]()
